The transformation of the historic Glenridding Hotel, now known as The Ullswater Inn, has complete, following an extensive refurbishment.
The Ullswater Inn sits within the English Lake District World Heritage Site, and local conservation area, with parts of building dating back to the 1860s. The renovations have been carefully designed and completed to sensitively upgrade and improve the historic building and provide it with a sustainable long-term future.
GSS have lead the refurbishment of the property, which was acquired by The Inn Collection Group in 2022. The inn now includes a new canopied entrance as well as improvements to the external facades, including sympathetic window and roof replacements and new signage to improve the overall appearance and experience for guests.

In addition, the existing bedrooms have undergone refurbishments, and the spa area has been removed to create further bedspaces. Upgrades to the inn’s hospitality services, including the restaurant and bar, have further improved the offering for guests and visitors alike.
Gabby Lynch, Senior Architect on the project comments, “Breathing new life into The Ullswater Inn within the iconic Lake District has been a rewarding experience for GSS. It’s fantastic to have seen the project develop from the initial design phase to completion and we hope each guest has a memorable experience.”
Simon Rennison-Rae, Partner at GSS said, “We are delighted to be working alongside The Inn Collection Group on another stunning project and are extremely pleased with The Ullswater Inn’s transformation. It has been a testament to the whole team that we have created a fantastic guest experience for visitors to the inn and I can’t wait to visit.”
We were appointed as Architects and Principal Designer on the scheme, alongside main contractors, LambertGill.
The Ullswater Inn is one of several that we are currently working on for The Inn Collection Group, including the recently completed iconic Tynemouth Castle Inn which has undergone extensive refurbishment and an extension to provide additional bedrooms, as well as sites in Wales, Yorkshire and the North East.
