Planning has been submitted for the expansion of Coppergate Clinic, an established private healthcare facility specialising in plastic surgery and aesthetics in the heart of York. The proposals will see the refurbishment and conversion of an adjacent vacant retail unit, providing additional clinical accommodation to support the clinic’s continued growth.
Working as Architect and Principal Designer CDM and BR, GSS have developed design proposals which respond to the needs of both the patients and the clinic’s multidisciplinary team. The extension will provide additional consultation rooms, general anaesthetic theatres, recovery facilities and an expanded waiting area, increasing clinical capacity. These will all operate in accordance with applicable Care Quality Commission requirements, ensuring a high-quality patient experience.
Maintaining the clinic’s established standards of quality, comfort and privacy has been central to the design approach. The proposals seek to create a seamless connection between the existing and new accommodation, providing a cohesive clinical environment that reflects the high-quality aesthetic and patient experience associated with Coppergate Clinic. Careful consideration has also been given to the relationship between clinical and support spaces, ensuring efficient circulation and a smooth patient journey.

With the existing clinic remaining fully operational throughout construction, careful planning of phasing, access and clinical operations will be essential. Drawing on their experience of delivering projects within live healthcare environments, GSSArchitecture has considered how the proposed works can be undertaken while minimising disruption to patients, staff and the clinic’s day-to-day operations.
Simon Rennison-Rae, Project Partner, has commented: “We are pleased to be supporting Coppergate Clinic with the next stage of its development. We have worked closely with the clinic to develop proposals that provide a seamless extension to the existing facilities, while carefully considering how construction can be managed to minimise disruption to patients and staff.”

Coppergate Clinic have said: “We are very excited with the prospect of expanding the clinical and administration facilities to allow us to further enhance the patient journey and expand the services we provide in a more spacious environment. Many of the existing design features are being incorporated into the expansion however there will be features included in the development to further improve the patient experience which we hold in high regard. We are very impressed with the thoroughness, efficiency, receptiveness and creativity the GSS team have exhibited throughout the last year bringing us to this point and look forward to launching the project with them.”
