The transformation of the historic Glenridding Hotel near Ullswater is now well underway, having started on site last month.
The Glenridding Hotel, now renamed to The Ullswater Inn, sits within the English Lake District World Heritage Site, and with parts of building dating back to the 1860s, the works have been carefully designed to sensitively upgrade and improve the hotel, providing the historic building with a sustainable long-term future.
We have teamed up with The Inn Collection Group, who acquired the hotel in 2022, to lead the refurbishment of the site. Plans for the hotel include a new canopied entrance as well as comprehensive refurbishment to the external facades, including sympathetic window and roof replacements and new signage to improve the overall appearance and experience for guests.
In addition, there will be alterations to the existing bedrooms and the existing spa area will be removed to create further bedspaces. Upgrades to the hotel’s hospitality services will further improve the hotel’s offering for guests and visitors alike.

Simon Rennison Rae, Partner at GSS said, “We are delighted to be working as Architects and Principal Designers on this scheme and are looking forward to seeing this transformation take place. Our team have a wealth of knowledge and are in a great position to create a fantastic guest experience for visitors to the hotel.”
This scheme is one of the several that GSS is delivering in partnership with The Inn Collection Group, including ongoing renovations at The Wateredge Inn and The Waterhead Inn and the recently completed Angel Inn. Further afield, we are also working as Architects on The Tynemouth Castle Inn, which will see the redevelopment and upgrades of the former Park Hotel in Tynemouth.
