Alex is an Architectural Technologist Apprentice currently undertaking a degree apprenticeship at GSSArchitecture, having joined the practice in 2020 at our Kettering office. From an early stage, Alex pursued subjects that supported his interest in the built environment, taking Geography, Physics, and Maths at A-Level. He complemented this interest with work experience at several firms, including Smithers Purslow, Benoy, GF Tomlinson, and Pick Everard.

Knowing that he wanted to take the apprenticeship pathway, Alex sought to find both a course and company that would support his further education. This was when he speculatively approached GSS. Before beginning his current apprenticeship, Alex completed a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction Management. He is currently completing his course: Architectural Technology – Design and Construction Management Degree Apprenticeship at London South Bank University, attending in-person classes once every week over a three-year period.

Reflecting on the benefits of the apprenticeship model, Alex noted how it allows him to earn while learning and gain practical insights faster than through traditional full-time study. Working closely with a mentor has fostered his logical thinking skills and taught him clear, step-by-step processes for tackling complex architectural challenges.

Alex’s ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders has been key to his development. The networking opportunities available both on-site and at university have further enriched his experience, helping him grow in confidence and competence.

At GSSArchitecture, Alex is currently contributing to significant projects such as the Freeman’s Green housing development. His responsibilities have provided opportunities to collaborate with design teams, present project concepts, and engage with clients in various social and professional settings. One of the highlights of working at GSS has been the chance to connect with mentors and industry professionals, receiving valuable feedback and guidance for continuous improvement.

In recognition of his work, Alex was recently nominated for the CIAT Greater London Region Student Awards 2024 at the EH Smith Design Centre in London. His project focused on the restoration of a brownfield site into a vibrant community hub in central London, demonstrating his confidence in taking a lead for projects.

Looking to the future, Alex’s goal is to become a fully qualified MCIAT Architectural Technologist. Through his apprenticeship, he has laid a strong foundation for continued growth and professional development, benefiting both himself and the clients he works with.
