Our Services
Our Services
The services we offer at GSSArchitecture reflect our commitment to delivering sustainably led design solutions that support you and your projects. Our fully integrated approach spans carbon reduction, energy efficiency, environmental frameworks, and health and wellbeing. These services enable the team to drive positive environmental impact and long-term value across our work.
Many of our clients have set Net Zero carbon or carbon neutral targets for their buildings and estates through either decarbonisation of their current estate, or through targeting Net Zero carbon in new buildings or investments. We have considerable experience of the design and delivery of projects that focus on low carbon/Net Zero, BREEAM Outstanding and RIBA 2030 Net Zero standards.
Reducing the embodied carbon of projects begins with a simple principle: reuse what already exists. As an organisation, GSS is committed to promoting the efficiencies and sustainable outcomes that can be achieved through retrofit projects by reusing or repurposing existing built assets. Through a fabric-first approach, thoughtful material selection, and targeted interventions, we aim to reduce operational energy demand and embodied carbon, whilst recognising the building’s cultural, social, and environmental value.

One Click LCA
One Click LCA is a life-cycle assessment and carbon analysis tool that provides an industry-wide platform to accelerate decarbonisation for projects. It enables us to consider materials, construction methods, operational use, maintenance, and end-of-life impacts. With several members of our team training in One Click LCA, we are able to guide clients and project teams towards choices that measurably reduce environmental impact while maintaining design quality, performance, and value.
SKA Assessments
SKA assessments are a sustainable initiative focused on the refurbishment and remodelling of existing buildings, which is a crucial part of the sustainability strategy that GSS promote with their clients. The assessments themselves help building owners, landlords and tenants assess remodelling and refurbishment projects against a series of sustainability best practice criteria.

WELL Building Standard
The WELL Building Standard places human health and wellbeing at the heart of building design. At GSS, we strongly value the creation of healthier environments that support the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of the people and communities who use them. WELL, provides an evidence-based approach to designing spaces that promote good air and water quality, access to daylight, thermal and acoustic comfort, movement, and inclusive, supportive environments.
Fitwel
There is increased recognition of the role buildings play in supporting mental and physical health. Fitwel is a health and wellbeing standard that focuses on delivering measurable benefits through simple, cost-effective design interventions. The standard supports healthier everyday behaviours by promoting movement, access to outdoor space, improved comfort, and inclusive, safe environments. By adopting Fitwel principles, we help clients create buildings and places that are easy to use, socially responsive, and supportive of long-term community wellbeing.

Passive House Designers
Passive House design is a proven solution that provides a range of approaches to deliver new and existing buildings optimised for low energy usage and focused on occupant health and wellbeing. Backed with over 30 years of international evidence, Passive House buildings provide a high level of occupant comfort using very little energy for heating and cooling. In addition to reduced energy consumption, the effective ventilation used in Passive House buildings deliver high air quality, supporting occupant health and wellbeing.
BREEAM
As one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment methods our in-house BREEAM-trained designers work collaboratively with clients and consultant teams at the outset to establish a clear sustainability strategy. This includes a fabric-first approach through careful selection of materials to minimise embodied carbon, and strategies to reduce in-use energy demand over the building’s lifetime. By considering whole-life performance alongside project objectives, programme, and cost, we support the delivery of buildings that achieve strong BREEAM outcomes.
Our Team
Our Team

At GSSArchitecture, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our dedicated Sustainability Team works across all projects to ensure that environmental responsibility, social value, and long-term resilience are embedded into our designs and processes.
By combining technical expertise with innovative thinking, the team helps clients achieve ambitious sustainability goals – from reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency, to creating healthier environments for people and communities.
Whether it’s guiding early design decisions, supporting accreditation processes such as BREEAM and WELL, or exploring new technologies and materials, our Sustainability Team is here to deliver practical, forward-thinking solutions that make a measurable difference.

Shannon Walker
Sustainability Lead
“Sustainability wasn’t always the direction I set out to follow in my professional career. In fact in many ways, it feels as though it found me. Through projects such as the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre for Teesside University, I discovered how powerful design choices can be in tackling environmental challenges while still being practical, accessible, and inspiring. That experience sparked a commitment to making sustainability feel less like an abstract ideal and more like something that can be embedded in every project, at every stage of the design process.
As Sustainability Lead, my role is to support GSSArchitecture in developing design strategies that balance innovation with usability, ensuring that sustainable choices are not only sound but also achievable for our clients and have a meaningful impact on the communities who use the spaces we create. I am passionate about helping to demystify sustainability, showing how thoughtful design can make it second nature rather than an add on!
For me, architecture has always been about people as much as buildings. Sustainability is a natural extension of that, creating environments that support both the present and the future.”

Simon Rennison Rae
Sustainability Innovation Group
” Sustainability is about making thoughtful, informed decisions that respect the resources we have and the places we build in. It means designing buildings from the outset that perform efficiently over their whole life, prioritising reuse and adaptability wherever possible, and creating healthy, enduring environments that support the people and communities who use them. Above all, sustainability is about taking responsibility for the long-term impact of our work as well as how we operate as a business.”

Oliwia Kuzma
Sustainability Innovation Group
“As a young professional, I see sustainability as designing with the future in mind — not just how a building looks or functions today, but how it will serve people, places, and the environment for generations to come. I find it especially rewarding to give existing buildings a second life through reuse and refurbishment, creating something that’s both enduring and sensitive to its history.”

Chris Walker
Sustainability Innovation Group
“I believe sustainability should be woven into every aspect of our lives, our business operations and design processes. Being part of the Sustainability Innovation Group enables me to contribute to advancing the education and training necessary for our practice to remain at the forefront of sustainable architectural knowledge. This, in turn, ensures we continue to promote and deliver environmentally responsible solutions for our clients.
