GSS are part of the design team that has been confirmed for the refurbishment and repairs of the King George VI Building at Newcastle University.

Originally built in 1936, the Grade II listed building currently houses the School of Education, Language Sciences and Pharmacy. The building will undergo a number of structural remediation works, in parallel with a ‘fabric first’ approach to reduce energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions, supporting the university’s aspirations in their journey towards Net Zero. In order to do this, a design team has been appointed including GSS along with main contractors Sir Robert McAlpine.

Appointed as Architects and Lead Consultants, we have a significant amount of experience in heritage and listed building works, and, together with our longstanding relationship with Newcastle University, are in good stead to improve the King George VI building to a high standard.
