The School of Design at the University of Leeds has a long and distinguished history. Since their foundation in 1874, they have established a reputation as one of the world’s leading centres for textile activities. More recent developments have seen the School expand its core focus to include the dynamic and constantly evolving areas of graphic design, fashion design, contemporary art practice and design, and materials technology.

This project formed a key part of the University’s expansion programme and included the provision of a range of new laboratories, design studios, workshops and display facilities; all of which have been housed within the historic fabric of the listed Clothworkers North and South Buildings.

As well as important improvements and enhancements to the fabric of the existing building (such as new energy efficient LED lighting, voltage optimisation, improved thermal performance and replacement fenestration), the project also involved the significant remodelling and refit of key areas to provide modern facilities to support the expanded course offering at the School. The blend of modern facilities in a characterful listed building has been highly successful.
