The refurbishment of the University of Huddersfield’s Grade II Listed Ramsden Building marks a major milestone in the restoration of one of the town’s most significant historic landmarks. Originally constructed in the 1880s as Huddersfield’s first Technical School and Mechanics’ Institute, the building has been carefully reimagined to support modern university life while celebrating its rich architectural heritage.

Led by GSSArchitecture as Lead Consultant, Architect and Principal Designer, alongside Henry Boot Construction, the project combines sensitive restoration with ambitious sustainability goals. As the first listed building within the University estate to undergo full decarbonisation, the refurbishment introduced modern energy-efficient systems, including air source heat pumps, helping remove 7% of the University’s gas-related emissions and saving approximately 2,450 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

The scheme has transformed the building into a high-quality teaching, learning and event environment for the International Office, International Study Group and Postgraduate Research Group. Historic features including the grand timber staircase, stained-glass windows and ornate interiors have been carefully restored, while the reintroduction of a dramatic double-height event space creates a vibrant new hub for the university community.
