The School of Geography at University of Leeds is recognised as one of the world's leading institutes and is renowned for cutting-edge research, which influences policy across a range of sectors.
The scheme centred on the complex refurbishment and remodelling of an existing 1960s building of significant architectural merit (Grade II listed), using a design and build procurement method.
The project involved remodelling and extending five floors across five connected buildings to accommodate and link three separate schools and academic departments, including the School of Geography, the Faculty of Environment and the Faculty of Biological Sciences - a total building area of 7,500m².
The interior redevelopment included flexible and collaborative spaces, including laboratories and traditional teaching space all designed to be future-proofed to adapt to future demands. Opening up the buildings helped to create a bright and welcoming building with professional and sophisticated facilities which maximised the use of the building footprint – a concept referred to as the ‘Third Space’ and the use of glass and large open plan areas increased flexibility and visibility.
"The design was developed in a proactive manner by the team from GSS, who provided good quality design development solutions for client approval and presented comprehensive technical design solutions to ensure that the original design intent was not compromised during construction."
