Millfield School is a co-educational independent school located in Street, Somerset. From its formation in 1935, it has grown into a centre of excellence for academic study and the arts, and has a strong reputation for sporting excellence.

Following a successful design competition, we were appointed to design a new indoor cricket and golf centre, to provide state-of-the-art training facilities within the campus.

Our design made dramatic use of site constraints, and a steep incline and sensitive local context were turned into an advantage, as the new buildings were designed to be embedded within the turf of the School's cricket and golf facilities. A sloping grass roof provided viewing terraces to connect the training and match day experience, with the sheltering earth providing a controllable environment, utilising cutting-edge lighting, materials and support facilities.

The new buildings were to be revealed by means of a sheer cut of sculptural stone, carving out a visual link that stitched together the school and sports campus. This channel of glass and stone would display the activity within and provide a modern platform for sporting excellence.
